Televisions

Televisions.com is an independent reviews platform for high-definition televisions, Blu-ray players, projectors, and Blu-ray movies. We combine years of experience in the AV industry with an arsenal of the latest measurement technology. Our measurements are carried out at AV T.O.P. Messtechnik GmbH, a consumer-electronics measurements laboratory based just outside of Munich, Germany.

The home page is divided into sections: Televisions, Projectors, Players, and Movies. Each of these has its own start page, which leads you to the latest reviews, news, and articles in that section. On the Televisions.com blog, you'll find articles that take a slightly different approach. In the blog, we try to provide interested readers with an overview of current developments — what's happening at current trade fairs, for example, or what new developments are sweeping the television industry. 3D TV, OLED TV, LED TVs, and IPTV are just some of the areas we're currently following.

Our reviews are some of the most in-depth you'll find anywhere on the internet. Indeed, we pride ourselves on being an authoritative reference for television enthusiasts, and our aim is to bring you reviews of the market's latest televisions, players, projectors, and films, as well as invaluable background and how-to articles relating to all aspects of home-cinema technology.

TV Size

Televisions reviews various sizes of TV. Choosing the correct size is crucial: For a start, buyers must take the viewing location into consideration — smaller rooms need smaller TVs. The resolution of your viewing material also plays an indirect role: Blu-ray movies need a Full HD TV in order to reveal their full detail. But there's no point in paying for Full HD resolution unless you're going to buy at least a 37-inch TV. So if you're planning to watch Blu-rays, you'll need to look for larger TVs than if you´re only planning to watch DVDs. For both LCD and plasma technologies, the reviews you'll find here can be divided into roughly three classes of screen size:

The "compact" class — Five inches smaller than the next size up, the 32-inch TV forms a class of its own, often referred to as the compact class. These TVs are ideal for viewing in a bedroom or kitchen, for example, or in smaller living rooms where the viewing distance will be no more than about two metres. Of course, a 32-inch TV will also appeal to budget-conscious customers: Basic 32-inch models are available for as little as 350 GBP, and since Full HD makes little sense on a screen of this size, buyers won't end up paying for resolution they can't enjoy anyway.

The "living room" class — TVs in this class must be small enough to integrate into a living room but still provide a large enough screen for extended viewing at larger viewing distances. A 37 inch TV or a 42-inch TV is the most common size, and suits a viewing distance of up to two and a half metres — more than enough for a larger room. A 42-inch TV is just about perfect for an average living room, and offers a sensible balance between home-cinema and living-room character.

The "home cinema" class — In the last of the three classes come the really big players. A 46-inch TV, 47-inch TV, or 50-inch TV will feel dominant in normal-sized living rooms, and is therefore better suited to large rooms or a dedicated home cinema. Still, if you really enjoy watching films at home and own a Blu-ray player, then a 50-inch TV is the ultimate indulgence. You can use the "Shop" section of Televisions.com to shortlist TVs that meet your required size. From there, you´ll find links to our in-depth reviews.
